U.S. Navy Laser Weapon Shoots Down Drones in Test

In a grainy, black-and-white video that looks like a home movie of a UFO attack a sleek aircraft streaks through the sky one minute, only to burst into flames the next and plummet into the sea.
The silent video, which Raytheon Co. debuts Monday at the U.K.'s Farnborough International Air Show 2010, however, is not science fiction. The defense contractor says it depicts part of a test conducted in May during which the U.S. Navy used a  solid-state laser to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles over the Pacific Ocean.

World's most powerful laser to trigger fusion reaction this year

A pivotal step in the march towards fusion power, the ''holy grail'' of sustainable clean energy, could be taken this year.
World's most powerful laser to trigger fusion reaction this year
Scientists have spent decades chasing the dream of fusion power, which holds out the promise of producing unlimited amounts of clean energy from hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe.

World's most powerful laser is what Dr. Evil wants for Christmas

Just how strong is the world's most powerful laser on earth? Powerful enough to light a match with ease? Try 500 trillion matches.

The BBC took a trip to the National Ignition Facility in California and had a look at the new laser record holder — a combination of 192 of the world's most powerful lasers. Hailed as "the laser to end all lasers," the laser has 500 trillion watts of energy.

Capable of striking at the same time (at once billionth of a second), the laser can generate up to 500 times more energy than the entire American national grid.

Thanks to nuclear fusion — a reaction that combines the nuclei of atoms and results in the release of huge amounts of energy, the laser would probably make for a very awesome doomsday present. Dr. Evil and Darth Vader would be giddy as a school girl if they found this under their Christmas tree.

Planet's Largest, Most Powerful Laser Will Modernize Nukes (With New Pix!)

What do you do with the world’s biggest, highest-intensity laser system? Well, for starters, you could blast the nuclei of hydrogen atoms and transform their mass into energy in a reaction that rivals the force and temperature of an exploding nuclear warhead.

But these brilliant beams are currently undergoing live-fire testing before beginning operations next year, and Popular Mechanics got its hands on these exclusive images of the NIF chamber actually in use.

TORCH WORLD MOST POWERFUL FLASHLIGHT BY WICKED LASERS ,$248

Torch World Most Powerful FlashLight by Wicked Lasers

Currently being reviewed by The Guinness Book of World Records, The Torch is the world's brightest and most powerful flashlight. This flashlight is easily capable of melting plastic, lighting paper on fire within seconds, and if you want, frying an egg or a marshmallow on a stick! At 4100 lumens, The Torch is 100 lumens more powerful than The Polarion Helios, the former most powerful flashlight

LASERS ON THE HIGH SEAS

The U.S. Navy wants to put powerful lasers on its ships to shoot down artillery shells and even cruise missiles at the speed of light (and really, who wouldn't). But there are a few scientific details to sort out before sailors can deploy the beams. "First we want to make sure the physics is right before throwing buckets of salt water over the thing," says Ed Pogue.

Pogue is the program manager for Boeing's free electron laser (FEL) program, potentially the most ambitious laser weapons program since the Pentagon's controversial airborne laser. In that program, the Missile Defense Agency spent billions of dollars and over a decade to get a laser-rigged jumbo jet to destroy a ballistic missile in its boost phase of flight. They eventually succeeded in February 2010, but the Obama administration nixed plans to develop the experiment into a battle-ready weapon.

Maybe the Navy's project will meet a better fate. In 5 years, at a cost of $163 million, Boeing hopes to get the physics right and demonstrate an extremely powerful--and hopefully seaworthy--giant laser. It's no small task, in part because the laser they're using is powered by several particle accelerators.

World's Most Powerful: Wicked Lasers The Torch | Lounge

In today's world, the term [electric] torch is often used simultaneously with flashlight. On the other hand, a conventional flashlight has practically zero designed fire power, as its purpose is to provide light; and depending on what you have, most consumer units have a very poor range. It's called The Torch for a really good reason -- simply put, it can burn things, and so on.

Carrying a 100W bulb powered by a massive nickel-metal hydride battery, anything within several inches of The Torch will definitely begin to heat up like mad in seconds. Meanwhile, other than its insane ability to transfer heat over short distances, The Torch is also insanely bright with an amazing range

The Spyder III, the World’s Most Powerful Portable Laser, Is a Real Life Lightsaber

Built with the blue-laser diode of a dismantled Casio Green Slim projector, the $200 Spyder III is the world’s most powerful portable laser. It can permanently blind you and set your skin—or anything else, really—on fire almost instantly.

The diodes in Casio’s new mercury-free Green Slim projectors apparently allow for unprecedentedly powerful portable lasers, and Wicked Lasers has gleefully harvested them for the 1 Watt Spyder III. Comparing it to the $2000 Sonar, the company’s reigning portable laser powerhouse, Wicked Lasers explains that the blue Spyder III laser is 2000 times brighter to the human eye, and, at $200, 1/10th the price.

Wicked Lasers is throwing in a free pair of safety glasses with the purchase of a Spyder III, which might make wielding one marginally safer, but just writing this post has left me terrified enough to stay as far away from these things as possible.

Going For Exawatts: Building the most powerful laser in the world

Ditmire plans to build an exawatt laser with a power equivalent to 1000 petawatts. But such a super-laser is still years away from actual development. In the meantime, Ditmire already has the most powerful laser in the world.
To get a sense of how much power an exawatt contains, compare it to a typical filament light bulb consuming about 100 W of electricity.
However, the laser does achieve the highest peak power an instant at a time. His method is to deliver a modest amount of energy over a period of less than one-trillionth of a second.
The main research uses for the Texas Petawatt Laser, as it is called, is to produce thermonuclear fusion, a process that many engineers would like to harness for the process of making commercial generators of electricity.
Laser devices are valuable since they can concentrate a lot of light energy into a tiny spot and send light beams in very straight lines, making possible things like laser surgery, laser surveying, and laser pointers.

Spyder II GX-BX Laser Pointer Series Review - The Worlds Most Powerful Green and Blue Laser Pointers

There is little that can be said against the world's most powerful elite hand held laser pointers anywhere, also known as, the Spyder II GX/BX Laser Pointer.

These one of a kind lasers are the most spectacular burning military lasers ever made available to any and every laser gadget hobbyist on earth. From 200mw to 300mw for the spyder ii gx 532nm green laser module and 15mw to 30mw for the spyder ii bx 473nm blue laser model, if you are familiar with laser milliwatts (mW) output power, you will see that this is extremely impressive for a portable laser diode.

As a matter of fact, the green spyder laser pointer has been recognized as the world's most powerful laser pointer by the Guinness Book of World Records circa 2007, giving great credit to the laser technicians and designers behind the scenes of the revolutionary laser.

This may be going to extremes, as you may know there are hundreds of impressive laser models out there, but a spyder controller is a particular breed of laser pointer owner, with a true passion for lasers.

National Ignition Facility: The most powerful laser on this planet

Reading a BBC article yesterday about the resurrection of cold fusion, I ran into a mention of the National Ignition Facility — which, I discovered, is the most powerful laser system on earth. 12,700 tons of rebar! 500 trillion watts of photonic destruction. But best of all, an absolutely superior website, at least by the standards of most federal internet presence. The layman's overviews are clear without being dumbed-down, and the in-depth stuff has enough sciency fodder to keep we nerds fat and happy for hours.

Prague to host world's most powerful laser

According to plans released by the European Commission, the laser will produce peak power in the exawatt range (equivalent to one trillion megawatts). So, for a very small fraction of a second, the beam will generate one million times more power than the entire U.S. electric grid. Believe it or not, that's plenty of time to conduct experiments that could reveal new cancer treatments and ways to deal with nuclear waste. Breakthroughs in either category would be incredible for the €700 million (about $1 billion) project, which also includes future plans to build two similar lasers, and a third that's twice as powerful the Prague installation -- roughly the same current draw as an HTC Thunderbolt.

World's Most Powerful Laser Gets Government Go-Ahead

Who knew it would take so long to approve a project to build the world’s most powerful lasers? Lasers are awesome. But after reconciling some paltry funding issues, the European Commission finally approved the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project, which plans to build three superlasers by 2015.
The lasers will be the first to operate in the exawatt scale--a quintillion watts. That’s about a million times more powerful than 10 billion 100-watt lightbulbs. And a fourth superlaser should be forthcoming, one with beams twice the power of these three. This is the laser that was theorized to be the most powerful laser possible.
The list of implications for this never-before-seen technology is long, reaching into cancer diagnosis and treatment, elimination of nuclear waste, broadening of the technology industry, and expansion of nanoscience and molecular chemistry research.
Several countries competed for the honor of hosting the laser. ELI's most important research laser will find its home in the Czech Republic while the other two will reside in Hungary and Romania.

Most powerful laser in the world fires up

Ditmire says that when the laser is turned on, it has the power output of more than 2,000 times the output of all power plants in the United States. (A petawatt is one quadrillion watts.) The laser is brighter than sunlight on the surface of the sun, but it only lasts for an instant, a 10th of a trillionth of a second (0.0000000000001 second).

Ditmire and his colleagues at the Texas Center for High-Intensity Laser Science will use the laser to create and study matter at some of the most extreme conditions in the universe, including gases at temperatures greater than those in the sun and solids at pressures of many billions of atmospheres.

This will allow them to explore many astronomical phenomena in miniature. They will create mini-supernovas, tabletop stars and very high-density plasmas that mimic exotic stellar objects known as brown dwarfs.

Most Powerful Keychain Laser Pointers

Laser pointers that fit on your keychain are usually small and pack a low punch in nanometers, which is the distance you would be able to see the laser clearly in complete darkness.

Executive Pro
The Executive Pro from Wicked Lasers is one of the most powerful keychain laser pointers on the market. It is cumbersome on the keychain, however, as it's a little over 6 inches in length.

PhysLink Laser Pointer
The Physlink keychain laser pointer is incredibly affordable at about $5 a unit and has a super bright range for its laser of up to 630 nm, or over 4,000 feet.

Mini Most Powerful Laser Pointer
The keychain $5 model of the Mini Most Powerful Laser Pointer has a standard wavelength distance of 650 nm and relies on a single battery to operate. It is more durable then the Physlink laser pointer and has an ON / OFF button as opposed to a push-button, so the laser life isn't as easily wasted.

Texans Build World’s Most Powerful Laser

Scientists have switched on the world’s most powerful laser, which for one-trillionth of a second is 2,000 times more powerful than all the power plants in the United States. The laser’s output tops a petawatt, which is a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) watts of power.

In the basement of the physics building at the University of Texas at Austin, the school’s High Intensity Laser Science Group built a petawatt laser in hopes of recreating astronomical phenomena like supernovae in miniature.

First, the newly elongated seed pulse is juiced by entirely different lasers using special crystals in a process called optical parametric amplification. This takes the power of the laser all the way to one joule. Then, it hits the rod amplifier, which is a 24-centimeter-long piece of glass that gets pumped with lights that the laser pulse can absorb. Finally, that pulse is fed through a disk amplifier, which can be seen below. Inside this amplifier, two disks of glass are juiced with pump lights that, after four passthroughs, bring the laser up to about 250 joules of energy.

The actual laser pulse will come out of the round hatch seen at the left of the chamber, where it will be directed at a target to mimic a nuclear explosion or an exotic dense star.

The work is sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration and totaled about $7 million in equipment costs.

World’s Most Powerful Laser has the Energy of a Hydrogen Bomb

Scientists working at the National Ignition Facility of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, have built the most powerful laser in the world, capable of simulating the energy force of a hydrogen bomb and the sun itself.

The Energy Department is expected to announce Tuesday that it has officially certified the National Ignition Facility, which would clear the way for a series of experiments which scientists hope will eventually will mimic the heat and pressure found at the center of the sun.

The successful completion of the laser is the culmination of more than a decade of work at a cost of $3.5 billion.
This artists rendering shows a NIF target pellet inside a hohlraum capsule with laser beams entering through openings on either end. The beams compress and heat the target to the necessary conditions for nuclear fusion to occur. Ignition experiments on NIF will be the culmination of more than 30 years of inertial confinement fusion research and development, opening the door to exploration of previously inaccessible physical regimes.
